Now I know what you’re thinking- they’ve probably already tried. They might have even succeeded. But THIS effort is for Science!

The Def Con security conference has been running a “Hack-a-Sat” contest for the past 4 years. The target, though, has always been on the ground in a lab. In a mere it-might-have-already-happened-if-the-weather-held days, the AeroSpace Corporations “Moonlighter” cubesat will be deployed in a proper orbit, for the specific use of security and infosec exercises.

Since it’s still specifically designed for this purpose, it will of course be highly sandboxed sat simulations that are being attacked. But they WILL be flying at 11 trillion miles per hour at over 6,800,000 miles from earth.

…or something. Back off man, I’m not a scientist.

Getting a crack at Moonlighter required some qualification rounds, which according to one participant included some “wicked-hard astrodynamics problems related to overall mechanics and positioning,” which I think means we finally found what Will Hunting has been up to lately.
