When building a software the first thing a software builder has to do is pick a software language to software in. And if you’re not in tech it can frankly be bewildering how many languages there are out there.

TIOBE, the software quality company, regularly releases a listing of the languages that are the most popular. They don’t do it in terms of language quality or power, it’s purely a listing based on the number of lines of code produced based on publicly available data.

Number 1 with a bullet is of course Python, and number 2 is still C probably because of stubbornness. Number 3 is Java because why not be self destructive, and then C++ is number 4. These are the titans of the software industry and they barely ever change their rankings.

Interestingly, the Google language Go snuck back into the top 10- albeit literally at 10, but hey. It counts. Go has been around for a while, but it hasn’t made the top 10 of this list for the past 6 years. It barely edged out Assembly for this March iteration, and time will tell if it sticks around. It would be good if it did. Scrappy underdog that Advertising Company Google is, it’d be keen if they could get a win!
