SIGH - Look, I know all the hip developers out there are plugging away on their trusty Mac Book Pros, but last I checked, Windows is still the most popular desktop operating system out there. Which is why I am always gob-smacked when things are released for macOS first/only.
Stepping off my soap box for a moment, nine months after the release of a DuckDuckGo browser for Mac comes a formal beta release for Windows users. Of significant note is that the DuckDuckGo browser is not simply using a reskinned version of Chromium, a la Edge.
Instead, the team at DDG built a new app that uses the WebView2 API and Blink rendering engine. A combination that they claim is faster than Chrome and blocks some of the tracking inherent in Windows Apps by going so far as to block crash reports being sent to Microsoft.
There is still a lot of work left to do on the browser, including better extension support and syncing across devices. But if you’re looking for a privacy focused browser on Windows, you could do a lot worse. And by a lot worse, I mean Chrome.
